Open. Authentic. Creative.
Dr Doug Rocks-Macqueen
Doug is both a videographer and archaeologist, with a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. This dual experience gives him a unique skillset for heritage based documentaries, as he is experienced on both sides of the camera. His archaeological work also ensures that we are especially conscious of the need for accuracy in what we say and present about the past.
Moreover, one of his areas of archaeological expertise is public/community archaeology, having worked for Archaeology Scotland to help communities discover and share their heritage. He has worked in over 20 countries as an archaeologists and videographer, from Scotland to Belize to Japan.
He has 20 years of archaeological experience and 15 years of videography under his belt.
James White
James is a videographer and a former community support worker. After graduating with an honours degree in psychology, he began his career working for GAMH and SAMH, helping vulnerable individuals to integrate into communities. It’s here he developed a passion for the connection communities share with their heritage, which led him to pursue the exciting world of videography. He studied under Doug, received a Diploma in Creative Media and completed a filmmaking course at the Royal Conservatoire.
For nearly 5 years, he has collaborated with Doug, starting as a trainee with Archaeology Scotland and later becoming a fully trained videographer at Open Past. James has worked in several locations, from Scotland to Berlin, gaining hands-on experience in camera work, editing, lighting, audio, and community engagement.
What we do
We help advance people’s knowledge, skills and wellbeing through filmmaking. We tackle any topic, although we have our roots in art, history, heritage, and archaeology. Our typical clients experience barriers to in-person education, including those with disabilities, limited funds, or from rural communities, and are often people who struggle to access the resources that many take for granted.
Why Open?
It’s important to us. Open Past was formed to create Open resources – we put our work, when we can, under Creative Commons licenses so others can use them. We believe that the exciting work of the heritage sector is for everyone. No matter who you are, where you are, or the means you have at your disposal. Open Past is for you!
