The ‘Barras’ Barrowland 100th anniversary

We created a short film on the 100th anniversary of the Barras market in Glasgow – something that is absolutely steeped in community and oral history. From Maggie McIvor’s entrepreneurial spirit that created the Barras to its modern-day use as a market and venue hall, we delved deep into how the community was shaped, and in turn, was shaped by the Barrs market.

Through a passionate local, Peter Mortimer, we were able to inform people of the history of Barra’s – a history that is not particularly well known among younger generations. As the Barras is such a staple of Glasgow East, we felt it very important to give people this resource to answer common questions that people often ask – “why is it called Barrowland?”, “Why does it have such an important place in the heart of the community when other markets don’t?”
